Drooping eyelids, crow's feet, and tired dark circles are common signs of aging in the eye region. To correct these problems, blepharoplasty is a plastic surgery that can alleviate these issues, rejuvenating the face and improving the patient's self-esteem and well-being.

Blepharoplasty is the procedure of lifting the eyelids, in which the surgeon eliminates fat bags and minimizes the natural sagging from aging. The upper drooping eyelids are the result of excess skin laxity, and the lower eyelids become swollen; fat bags develop with age due to fat prolapse under the eyes. These changes generally contribute to a more aged appearance.

For the upper eyelid, all individual lines and folds are marked to keep the incisions as invisible as possible along the natural creases. The incision is made, and a precise amount of excess fat, muscle, and loose skin contributing to the problem is removed.

On the lower eyelid, the incision is made in an imperceptible location, just a few millimeters below the lash line and along the folds of the lower eyelid. Again, a precise portion of skin, fat, and muscles is carefully removed. Extremely fine sutures are then used to meticulously close the incisions, minimizing the visibility of any scars.

Combined techniques

To undergo blepharoplasty, the patient needs to be in good physical health and align emotional expectations with the surgeon. In addition to a medical evaluation, the patient will likely need to undergo blood lab tests.

The use of anticoagulant medications before surgery is not advisable. Alcohol and smoking should also be avoided before the procedure, and an absolute fast is required 8 hours before the surgery.

Post-surgery care

After surgery, it is common for the operated area to be sensitive and a bit swollen, so the rest period varies between one week and a month. During this period, extra care is required to ensure safe healing and adequate recovery.

Therefore, pay attention to these tips:

  • Avoid exposure to the sun, wind, and cold;
  • Avoid rubbing the eyes;
  • Do not lie on your side;
  • When applying compresses, use saline solution;
  • Sleep with two pillows to keep the head elevated;
